William “Bill” Frederick Smith

Age 83, peacefully passed Tuesday, January 6, 2026. William was born on November 1, 1942, in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio, to James William Smith and Helen Lucille Moreland Smith. He grew up in Ironton and later graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

Before beginning his professional career, Bill proudly served in the United States Army. Following his military service, he built a successful career as an engineer, working in South Africa and later in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he spent much of his life.

Bill was a devoted fan of Pittsburgh sports and, after retiring, combined that passion with entrepreneurship by owning a restaurant and sports bar. He was also an avid traveler who found great joy in spending time in Costa Rica, a place he considered his home away from home.

Above all, Bill cherished his family. He shared an especially close bond with his brother, Larry; the two spoke every Wednesday and were not only brothers, but best friends.

Bill is survived by his brother Larry (Amy) Smith; his niece, Molly Reynolds; his great-nephews, Cosmo Reynolds, Otis Frederick Reynolds, Jasper Reynolds, and Orson Reynolds; and his great-niece, Olive Reynolds. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Fearing.

Following cremation, the family will hold a private memorial to share stories, laughter, and love in remembrance of Bill, whose spirit will forever remain in their hearts. Arrangements entrusted to WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, Scott Twp. (412-563-2800)
