William F. Lewis

June 8, 1936 — February 6, 2025

Mt. Lebanon

William F. Lewis, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the age of 88. Bill was born on June 8, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late William Francis Lewis and Marion Pearl (Finholt) Lewis. He married Carolyn Adams, of Park Ridge, Illinois, on November 21, 1964; they recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Bill is survived by his wife Carolyn, sons Bill (Kathleen) and Bob (Nicole), and daughters Kadee (Danny) and Kristin (Phillip). Bill was devoted to his eight grandchildren, who survive him:

Jed, Evan, Maggie, Blake, Hayden, Alexa, Bella and Zoe, as well as four great-grandchildren, Charlie, Talulah, Violet and Adelaide.

Shortly after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Purdue University (1959), Bill began his thirty-five-year career with Alcoa. His tenure there included being named President of International Trading, where he presided over fourteen Asian/Pacific countries and relocated his entire family to Hong Kong for three years. Bill also worked in Alcoa’s Merger and Acquisitions division, playing a pivotal role in corporate development and new business start-ups. During his early career at Alcoa Bill also served as a Reservist for the U. S. Naval Reserve from 1961-1967.

As a life-long advocate of one’s obligation to civic duties and volunteerism, Bill’s decades long involvement and dedication to causes he believed in reflected his commitment and resolve in making a difference in his community. Over the years Bill was a member of the Allegheny County Library Association’s Audit Committee, the Advisory Board of the Allegheny Institute for Public Policy, the Mt. Lebanon Historical Society Board, the Mt. Lebanon Traffic Board, the Parking Authority Board, as well as the Friends of the Mt. Lebanon Library. It was this latter entity where Bill really left his mark, serving on the Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2008, and as President from 2012-2017. His passion, dedication, and boundless energy inspired all those around him to excel, thus being instrumental in shaping the library into the vibrant community that it is today. Additionally, Bill served as Judge of Elections and was on the Board of Directors for Indoor Tennis for Mt. Lebanon.

In retirement Bill discovered a new passion, and became an enthusiastic genealogist, tracing his Norwegian, English, Scottish and Welsh lineage back to the early 1700’s. For over three decades Bill assembled an impressive collection of family records, including detailed stories of family lore, birth and death certificates, and locations of grave sites; this pursuit even led to an overseas trip to England, Wales and then to Norway in a quest to find the old Finholt Family Farm. Bill’s life accomplishments reflect an extremely generous individual completely committed to his family, friends and community, and he leaves an inspiring legacy that will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on all those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, and in the spirit of Bill’s passion for volunteerism, we ask that you consider donating your time to a cause worthy of his memory.
