Thomas Andrew Owens, MD passed away unexpectedly on July 25, 2022. Tom is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Kathleen Anne Owens. They met early on and had an adventurous and storied life together traveling the world and taking on lots of projects. Tom was a personal hero and amazing father to his children Tom James Owens and Lara Bevan Owens who have him to thank for their sense of wonder, love of nature and faith for the world they live in. Thomas was the son of Thomas C Owens, MD and Dolores Patterson and loving brother to Nicky, Nathan, Kimmy, Betsy, and Janie.
Tom graduated cum laude with a Bachelors degree in biology from Penn State, and from Jefferson Medical College in 1980. Tom was a beloved Family Practitioner and Emergency Room physician in Cambria County for 32 years.
Tom sought out any chance to be outside, either on his tractor, visiting the mountains out west near his adult children, taking photographs, and visiting each of the national parks. He was an accomplished outdoorsman, scuba diver, pilot, white water kayaker and skier.
Dr. Tom was so many things to so many people. He was a major supporter of his community as a family doctor for three decades, caring for neighbors, high school sports teams and patients from all over who loved him for his compassion and honest nature. Tom was a dedicated youth coach and referee. He organized to bring AYSO and league soccer to his local Cambria Heights school district, through fundraising and pick-up leagues.
He was a true Renaissance man in every sense of the word - an amateur boat builder, pyrotechnic engineer, bridge builder, certified pesticide administrator, inventor of the wooden car bumper, horse whisperer, midnight hockey league defenseman, musician, tree surgeon, snowmobile mechanic, and voracious reader.
But most importantly, to those who knew him – patients, family, friends, either in passing or for their whole lives - Tom was the most caring and generous person you might have ever met. He always lent a helping hand, no matter how big or small, some advice, a listening ear, and always with an open heart.
Services will be private by the family. The Owens family arrangements entrusted to WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, Scott Twp.
