Thomas J. O’Connor

Thomas J. O’Connor, Age 74, Suddenly, on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025. Loving husband of 54 years to Kathleen Dugan O’Connor, Beloved father of Tom, Jr. (Jennifer) Ben (Aimee), Kevin (Mackenzie) and Patrick (Morgan). Adored Pap-Pap to Aidan, Collin, Tristan, Delaney, Donovan, Tenley, Kennedy, Kacey, Brecken and Emery O’Connor. 

Tom grew up in the Overbrook section of Pittsburgh, the son of the late Thomas and Violet O’Connor and quickly became a baseball star. Upon being drafted in the 13th round of the MLB draft by the New York Yankees in 1969, he rose through the farm system with stops at Johnson City, Fort Lauderdale, Oneonta, Kinston and West Haven. After a wrist injury ended his career, Tom worked for the Boilermakers Local 154 for the next 33 years and was a proud union man. With a campaign of “Integrity and Honor-Vote O’Connor”, he became President of the local and served until his retirement in 2008. Tom was also a WPIAL basketball official for over 20 years. Upon retirement, he could be found at all of his grandchildren’s games and performances with his soul-mate Kathy (Gegie) by his side, outside doing yardwork or playing with his dog, Zip. 

Always the life of the party, holiday gatherings or family vacations, he was quick with a joke or story and would talk to anyone-usually producing a laugh or two. His sense of humor and wit will be missed by all. True to his favorite song by Frank Sinatra, Tom certainly lived his life and did it “My Way”. 

Family and friends welcome Monday, January 6, 2025 from 2-8 pm with Boilermakers Local 154 service at 7:00 pm WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp. 15220. Funeral mass Tuesday, January 7, 2025, 10:00 am at SS Simon & Jude Church, St. Raphael the Archangel Parish. EVERYONE PLEASE MEET AT CHURCH. Burial will be private to the family.
