Scott Township

Sara Elizabeth (Hoffman) Lindsay, age 90, at Providence Point, Scott Township PA.

Formerly of Hershey’s Mill, Chester County, Pennsylvania, Fairfax, Virginia, and numerous Naval Stations throughout the country and world. Sally graduated from Penn State University, Class of 1954, and was a life-long supporter of the University. She was a kindergarten teacher, a hard working Navy wife and a fabulous, unflappable and opinionated mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend. Her Navy “family” was large and varied and as a result, she amassed friends near and far. Sally was a tireless volunteer who believed that one shouldn’t complain unless you dive in and work to make needed changes. She instilled in her children the responsibility to give to the country and communities in which they are so fortunate to live.

Daughter of the late Fred E. and Sara E (Howerth) Hoffman of Sunbury, PA and sister Joyce Ann (Jack) Schreffler. Former spouse of the late Captain William E Lindsay, USN, Retired, and mother-in-law of the late Kent McLaughlin. Mother to Becky (John) Surma, Suze Lindsay and the PBB, Dr. Fred Lindsay. She loved, encouraged and teased her grandchildren Brendan, Jack, and Eric (Morgan) Surma and Josie, Claire and Ian Lindsay.

She was delighted by her two great granddaughters, Caroline and Reese Surma.

She is also survived by her nephew Ken (Shelia) Schreffler, and nieces Emily (Buzz) Conover and Meg Schreffler, and their children, Matt (Alicia Martin) Schreffler, Katie Schreffler,

Erin Valentine (Morgan Moore), Quinn Conover and Hunter (Sydney) Conover, who were all important in her life as were her nephews James Hilton and Bill Hilton, sons of her late sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Lindsay (James) Hilton.

Sally moved to Providence Point in 2009, at its opening, and enjoyed living in the wonderful continuing care retirement community. She was involved in resident governance and other activities and became a great supporter of the staff and residents there. She was also a long time member of Southminster Presbyterian Church.

A memorial service will be held at Providence Point at a future date. Interment is private.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Baptist Homes Society, Employee Appreciation Fund. https://baptistseniorfamily.org/philanthropy/ or the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society https://support.nmcrs.org/a/homepage.
