Age 90, of Mt. Lebanon, on Friday, February 14, 2014. Dr. Hershey is survived by Jeanine, his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, his daughter, Pamela, of New Orleans, LA, his sister, Eleanor Jean Earnest of Greensburg, and his brother, William Hershey of Naples, Florida, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Grace Hershey of Greensburg, and his brother, John Hershey of Aiken, South Carolina.
Dr. Hershey was born in Greensburg, PA. He graduated from Mount Union College in 1944 after winning a full scholarship. He then joined the Army and rode hospital trains for two years before obtaining his medical degree in 1950 from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Hershey completed his neurosurgical residency at Mercy Hospital where he trained under the tutelage of Dr. Floyd H. Bragdon. Upon completing a neurosurgery fellowship at Boston Memorial Hospital, under Dr. Donald Munroe, he chose to return to Pittsburgh to join Dr. Bragdon's practice, Neurosurgical Associates of Pittsburgh, which later became Pittsburgh Neurosurgery and Neurology Association. He had the honor of caring for countless patients over his thirty year career.
Dr. Hershey was board-certified in neurosurgery and was a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association, the Allegheny County Medical Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons and the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine and was past president of the Mid-Atlantic Neurosurgery Society. Dr. Hershey was emeritus, senior staff at Mercy Hospital and also practiced at St. Clair Hospital, South Side Hospital, Jefferson Hospital and Washington Hospital. He served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, where he continued to mentor medical students after his retirement.
Dr. Hershey loved Pitt football, bowling with the St. Clair Country Club men's and mixed leagues, family vacations in Florida and horse showing with his daughter. He especially enjoyed his weekly bridge games with Dr. Gene Delserone, Dr. George Pavlic and Dr. Tim Janeway, all of whom tolerated many years of feisty behavior.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrew Joseph, Dr. Robert Bragdon and Jeff Bragdon for their friendship and support. Special thanks to Dennis.
