Rebecca Dick-Hurwitz

Rebecca Dick-Hurwitz, 67, passed away on December 9th, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from endometrial cancer. She is predeceased by her parents (Jane and Joe Dick), her mother/father in law (Rhoda and Sidney Hurwitz), and sister-in-law Vicki Silver (Mike); and survived by her husband of 43 years Jon Hurwitz; her daughter Joanna Hurwitz (Randy); her brother Dan Dick (Carol Sakala); her nephews and nieces Richard Burns (Camaron), Jesse Burns (Megan), Jonah Sakala, and Leah Sakala; her great-nephews Jared Burns and Luke Burns; her sister-in-law Deborah Burns (the late Rick Burns); and a myriad of close friends.
After a happy childhood in Park Forest, Illinois, she attended Indiana University, where she met the love of her life, Jon Hurwitz. They married in 1978 and welcomed their beloved daughter Joanna in 1991.

Becca embodied the rarest combination of qualities: a brilliant mind, an artistic spirit, and a compassionate soul. After earning a B.A. in Fine Arts, she attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, graduating in 1991, and went on to a career in employment law, most recently at Babst Calland. In response to anyone asking about her career, she would respond "I'm a lawyer, but I'm a really nice person."

Retirement offered her the opportunity to pursue her other passions. A gifted artist, she honed her skills in several mediums, especially silversmithing and painting. At the same time, she continued to nurture strong ties to her many friends, old and new, faithfully checking on people, even during her last illness. She was wonderful company, with a raucous wit and an unfailing knack for making others feel comfortable. Additionally, she offered her indefatigable energy and talents to the broader community, volunteering at the Mount Lebanon Public Library; creating a program at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC, teaching arts and crafts to patients; working for Democratic candidates at the local and national level. Also central to Becca was a deep love for animals, making her a life-long vegetarian, a rescuer of a half-dozen dogs, and a board member of Pittsburgh Animal Friends. Most of all, though, she loved her family time, whether vacationing across the United States, Australia, and Europe; crafting and shopping with Joanna; or watching Godfather marathons with Jon. We were all so blessed to have this bright, hilarious, good woman in our lives.
