Mary Anne (Maier) Heckla, 78, of Green Tree, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, surrounded by her family. Mary Anne was born in 1946 to the late Regis J. and Eleanor M. (Zanotti) Maier. She is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Walter E. Heckla, adoring children Kimberly Mitnick (and her husband, Brian) and Jonathan Heckla (and his wife, Tasha, who was not only Mary Anne’s beloved daughter-in-law of 20 years, but also her dedicated caregiver at the end of her journey.) Her three grandsons, Keith Maiden Jr (Angel Face), Kurt Maiden(Kurtie Burtie), and Kyle Maiden (Ky Ky) will miss her dearly, but will always remember the special times spent with their precious “Mimers.” Mary Anne is also survived by her sister, Roberta Jean (Maier) Legge, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Alice (Heckla) Havics and Sam Heckla, several nieces and nephews, and many other cherished family members.
Mary Anne grew up in the North Side (27th Ward) and graduated from St. Benedict Academy in 1964. She loved to play sports, especially golf, racquetball, softball and volleyball. She enjoyed entertaining and was an excellent cook. “Big Mar,” as she became affectionally known, loved a good party, never turned down a drink (or four), danced and sang to Doo Wop tunes, and always wanted to be surrounded by her friends and family. Some of her favorite times were spent in Ocean City, Maryland with her children and grandsons. Big Mar was small and mighty, loved being loud and always drew attention wherever she went. While she was a force to be reckoned with, she also had the biggest heart. She would do anything for anyone. She lived her life having fun and doing “bad.” Her final years weren’t the way she would have wanted to live, but Mary Anne left this earthly existence peacefully and with a smile on her face, knowing how fiercely she was loved.
