KAIL, Martha
An intuitive wife, mom, grandmother and aunt who mastered “the look” that caused her children (and sometimes their friends) to fall into line without a word, Martha, 103, of Pittsburgh, peacefully reunited Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, with her beloved husband, Joseph. Survived by their children, the Very Rev. Chorbishop Michael J. Kail; Mariann Kail (Andrew) Sobieralski; Frances (Art) D’Uva; Judith Kail; Rosanne (Ted) Javorsky; Theresa Kail (Tom) Smith and Patricia Kornick, as well as Richard (Shirley) Kail and Robert Kail (Gerry Dalton), nephews by blood, “bonus” sons in heart. Additionally, survived by eight treasured grandchildren, Casondra Sobieralski; Heather Sobieralski (Chris Rill); Suzanne (Kevin) Hendricks; Steven (Tommy) Smith: Nicole (Wayne) Liddle; Michelle (Tony) Santavicca; T.J. Smith (Shona Jiggetts); and Zachary Javorsky; and 14 great grandchildren, Steven; Skyler; Kaylee; Griffen; Eleanore; Jacob; Elena; Michael; Olivia; Dante; Max; Nataley; Ava and Audrey. Also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews spanning four generations. Preceded in death by her newborn son, Joseph; newborn grandson, Thomas; nephew Eugene Kail; parents, Joseph and Patricia Zennie; siblings, Helen (David) Kail; Albert (Lila) Zennie; Dorothy (John) Thomas; and E. David (Dolores) Zennie; and sisters-in-law Philomena Kail and Genevieve (Regis) Kennedy. An avid reader with a quick wit, the unwavering faith, grace and humility with which Martha lived her life is matched closely by her devilish humor and notorious sweet tooth. We mourn the loss while celebrating the life of this resilient, inspirational woman. A “second mom” to many, she opened her heart and home to countless others, leading by example and blessing us with love, selflessness, discipline, valuable life lessons, and pragmatic pearls of wisdom too numerous to count.
