Martha M. Bosley, loving wife and mother, 100 years old, died Friday, February 23, 2024, at Providence Point in Scott Township, PA.
She was born in Vandergrift, PA on November 11, 1923, to Giacobbe and Mary Milie. Of her parents' ten children, Marty was the last surviving sibling. Family was very important in Marty’s life. She frequently visited her siblings, nieces and nephews in Vandergrift.
Marty was predeceased by her husband Jack, in 2016 and siblings Marie & August Pugliese, Jack & Dorothy Milie, Teresa & Aurelio Ferraro, Jeanne & John Shaffer, Louis & Ellen Milie, Elene & David Summers, Robert (Maureen) Milie, William Milie and Alquin Milie.
Growing up, Marty enjoyed playing tennis and became quite good at the sport.
Marty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh. While in school, she worked at the Buhl Planetarium and after graduation, the Mellon Research Institute. Her knowledge of astronomy from working at Buhl, generated an interest in that field which was passed on to her children.
Marty married Jack Bosley on November 22, 1947. They lived in Steubenville, OH, for a short period of time before moving to Pittsburgh, where she would be closer to her family and where she started her own family. They raised two sons, John J. III (Margaret) and William D. They had three granddaughters, Christina Coulter (Don), Meredith Pollack (Todd), Cassie Bosley and a grandson, Guille Bosley, along with four great-grandchildren, Ben & Katie Coulter and Hannah & Will Pollack. Marty also had many nieces and nephew who loved her dearly.
The family eventually relocated to Mt. Lebanon, PA in 1959 and joined the St. Thomas More Parish. Marty was a devout Catholic and a lifelong member of this Parish. She was a bibliophile and with others, established the St. Thomas More School Library. She also volunteered there while her children were in school. Marty was an avid reader and was often seen sitting in her favorite chair in the den at home, reading a book.
Her love of the Arts was manifested in numerous ways. She was an active supporter of Dr. Sam Hazo’s International Poetry Forum. In her early 40’s, Marty started taking piano lessons and enjoyed playing for many years. She instilled an appreciation for music in her children, which began while they were in grade school, when they attended the Children’s Concert Series of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Classical music was often played on the home stereo. She sang in the St. Thomas More Choir for more than 40 years, including for funeral liturgies in what is now known as the Resurrection Choir and volunteered with The Marthas, the Hospitality Ministry that greets family and serves guests at the luncheon after a funeral.
Marty loved to travel with Jack, visiting six of the seven continents. Reaching back to her Italian heritage, she studied Italian before going to Italy. Marty and Jack would research all the places they were going to see. When they returned from their trips, looking at their photos and listening to their explanations was like a National Geographic Travelogue. Through her travels, Marty made long lasting friendships with people from France and Australia.
After moving to Providence Point in 2009, Marty was active in organizing their library and involved in supporting Jack with the Resident’s Council and his extensive volunteer work with the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Marty's intellect and gentle demeanor were positive influences on people throughout her full life. She leaves glowing memories among family and friends alike.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Three Rivers Hospice, 300 Oxford Dr. Monroeville, PA 15146 or OSPTA Hospice, 625 Lincoln Ave. #207, N. Charleroi, PA 15022.
