Margit “Gitta” Markos (née Vasarhelyi-Szabo), born on February 5, 1929, in Szekesfehervar, Hungary, to parents Julianna (née Knitthoffer) and Gyorgy Vasarhelyi-Szabo, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, in Columbia, Pennsylvania. She was 96 years old.
Margit’s life was marked by resilience, grace, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around her. A refugee from Hungary following the Second World War, she journeyed to the United States with her family in search of safety and opportunity. Her courage during that time laid the foundation for a life defined by perseverance and quiet strength.
Settling into her new home in America, Margit built a meaningful career as an accountant at PPG Industries. Her dedication and precision were hallmarks of her professional life, and she remained committed to her work throughout her career. Settling into her new home in the US, Margit met her beloved husband of 54 years, Julius. She completed a course of study in accounting at the University of Pittsburgh in furtherance of her decades long career at PPG Industries.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Margit was known for her kindness to others—a quality that touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She enjoyed summers at their vacation home in Somerset, PA as well as attending the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera. Even after decades in the US, Hungary always held a special place in her heart; she carried its traditions and spirit with her throughout her life.
Margit was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Julius Markos; her sister, Alice Devenyi; her brother, George Szabo; and her niece Alice Devenyi. She is lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews Ildiko Seitzer, Aniko Kaye, Istvan Devenyi, Attila Devenyi, Cecilia Devenyi, Jacqueline Szabo, George Szabo, Laura Szabo, and Michelle Szabo.
May Gitta's memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
