Lurana Mary Patterson, age 67, died at home in Greentree on Monday, August 18, 2014. She was with her two children and four cats when she lost her three-year battle with Leukemia.
Lu was born May 10, 1947 in Pittsburgh and attended Bishop Canvein High School. She had a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Duquesne University (1969). Lu went on to receive a Master of Science degree as a clinical specialist in medical/surgical nursing from the University of Colorado Medical Center Graduate School of Nursing (1971). She held nursing positions at St. Clair Memorial Hospital, South Side Hospital, UPMC Presbyterian, and at Colorado General Hospital at the University of Colorado Medical Center. Lurana also served as a paramedic instructor at Altman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. She was employed as Casual Nurse Educator at UPMC Presbyterian, and a Graduate Program Instructor (Trauma Area of Specialization) at the University of Pittsburgh.
She volunteered to plan and conduct programs for a variety of community groups on diverse health topics. She was also a Camp Nurse for the Greater Pittsburgh Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Lurana was predeceased by her parents, Eva and Vincent Patterson (U.S.M.C. Retired). She is survived by her two children, Kathleen and Joseph (U.S.M.C.) (Jennifer) Patterson, her sister, Marguerite Patterson, and her niece, Eva Poppert.
Friends will be received at Slater Funeral Home, 1650 Greentree Rd. on Wednesday, August 20 from 1:00-3:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Her funeral Mass will be at St. Simon and Jude Church, 1607 Greentree Rd. on Thursday, August 21 at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers please donate to Animal Friends, Leukemia Society, or Western Pennsylvania Humane Society.
