Katherine B. Frommeyer

Katherine Birris Frommeyer, age 77 and a lifelong resident of Mt. Lebanon, has gone to rest after her fight with leukemia. Survived by her beloved husband of 50 years Thomas A. Frommeyer; loving mother to Andrew (Kristin) and Gregory (Amanda); and Yiayia to grandchildren Tessie, Peter, Cora, Nicholas and Melanie. Preceded in death by parents Dr. Thomas P. Birris and Niki (Avlon) Birris; sister to the late Paul T. Birris (Mary); survived by brother Dr. Thomas P. Birris Jr. (Jane).

Kathy graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1962. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Chatham College in 1966 (where she was a recipient of a Buell Foundation Scholarship), and earned a Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1969.

Kathy dedicated her life to the service of her faith. A lifetime parishioner of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Mt. Lebanon, she began serving her church during her youth as a GOYA officer/president and choir member. Kathy’s adult service includes: Sunday School teacher, Parish Council, House Committee, Food Festival Co-Chair, Philoptochos Society, and most recently, coordinating greeters for the Welcoming Committee and judging oratorical festivals. In recognition of her continuous contributions, Kathy (along with husband Thomas) received the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh St. Photios Award.

Passionate about educating others, Kathy taught Mathematics at Mt. Lebanon School District for 35 years, retiring in 2008. She was recognized in the Who’s Who of American Educators in 2000.

Kathy will be remembered by all for her selfless service, unceasing love & thoughtfulness, and enduring smile.

Family and friends will be received,  WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township 15220) on Tuesday, October 11 from 2-4pm & 6-8pm (7pm Trisagion service), and on Wednesday, October 12 from 10-11am at Holy Cross Church (123 Gilkeson Road, Mt. Lebanon 15228). Kathy’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11am at the church, followed by interment at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Additionally, in recognition of the immediate need of those struggling and their caregivers, please donate blood.
