Judith B. Over, better known as Judy, passed away on August 28, 2025, after a brave struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Judy was a native of Roaring Spring, PA, and had been living at Providence Point in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, PA, since 2014.
In 1957, she married R. Stanton Over, also of Roaring Spring, whom she had known since the fourth grade. In June, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
Judy graduated from the nursing program at Harrisburg Hospital in 1956. Her nursing career included work in psychiatry, maternity, dermatology, a nursing home, and a public school. Most of her life’s work, however, was dedicated to caring for her growing family.
She will be remembered by her family as the consummate Mom and Grammy. All her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, and granddaughter-in-law were loved equally and unconditionally.
Her son Tom’s high school friends affectionately nicknamed her “Perky,” a reflection of the joy, warmth, and energy that endeared her to all who knew her. In every community she joined—whether book clubs, water aerobics classes, or church groups—Judy made lasting connections and gave of herself generously. At Lake Wylie, she helped create and maintain the resident directory, ensuring neighbors were connected. In this way, she built friendships that she carried throughout her life.
In recent days, family and friends have called and written to share their memories, often saying, “I just love Judy!”—a simple phrase that beautifully sums up the affection she inspired in everyone around her.
Judy was predeceased by her parents, T. Paul Butler and Maude Benn, and her sister, Eileen. She is survived by her husband, Stanton; their three sons: Randall (Ann) of Cleveland, OH; Thomas (Julie) of Charleston, IL; and Joel (Lisa) of Pittsburgh, PA. She also leaves behind five grandchildren (Sarah, Ryan, Molly, Nathanael, Abigail), three great-grandchildren (Amy, Radek, David), her stepsister, Nancy Benn, and her cousin, Carolyn Moody—both of whom were like sisters to her—her stepbrother, Rich Benn (Sharon), and several dear cousins.
Throughout her adult life, Judy was an active member of the Presbyterian Church. She served as an ordained Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg, PA, and later shared her gifts through the membership committee at Providence Presbyterian Church in Fairfax, VA, and the visitor follow-up team at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh.
A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Providence Point on Sunday, September 14, at 2:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Chartiers Room. After cremation, at a time convenient to the family, her ashes will be interred in the columbarium of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, 1021 E. Garrison Blvd, Gastonia, NC.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Employee Appreciation Fund, Baptist Homes Foundation, 500 Providence Point Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15243, or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15241.
