Of Mt. Lebanon (formerly of Scott Township), peacefully surrounded by her loving family, after a long life dedicated to her family and her strong Catholic faith, on Sunday, February 11, 2018. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Theodore Barr, Sr.; and loving son, Francis Barr. Joyce was the seventh, and last surviving of nine children of Franklin and Eleanor Joyce McQuaide. She is survived by her children James (Carilyn) Barr, Jr. of Brandon, FL, Mare (Richard Ohl) Barr, Kathleen (Bill Scanlon) Barr, Patricia (Pete) Kulzer, and Maureen (Glenn) Valentine, all of Pittsburgh, PA. Cherished gram of Jacqueline (Ronan) Carroll, Michael Barr, Tara (Michael) Downs, Marissa (Michael Seamans) Barr-Hartman, Sean (Ashlee Kelly) Valentine, Meghan, Anna and Nora Kulzer; proud great-grandma of Chloe Barr, Eoin Carrol, Evelyn Furrick and Josie Hartman; loving step-grandma of Adam (Beth) Hartman, Leese Jameson, Jennifer and Kevin Scanlon. She is loved by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. As matriarch, her wisdom and brilliance guided generations of the family of which she was so very proud. Raised on Mt. Washington, and a graduate of St. Mary of the Mount, Joyce was an avid reader whose amazing stories of family and Pittsburgh history will never be forgotten. Her devout Catholic faith led her to work as the secretary of SS. Simon & Jude Church and to be an integral member of both SS Simon & Jude and St. Bernards parishes. A special thanks to her neighbors on Cherrydell Drive, 900 Washington Road, great-niece and caregiver, Chelsea Hammond; caregivers, Aubrey and Mary Ann, who helped her to maintain her fierce independence. Our thanks to the staff and hospice care unit at St. Clair Hospital. Joyce never had a bad thing to say about anyone and was the kindest woman we have ever known. She left this world a better place, and we are all blessed for having had her in our lifes.
