Joseph J. Walsh

Pittsburgh

Joseph Jerome Walsh of Pittsburgh, PA, a beloved one-of-a-kind son, brother, cousin, uncle, co-worker, neighbor and friend died unexpectedly on May 23, 2026 at the age of 65. He was born in Binghamton, NY, on September 6, 1960 to Joseph Paul and Jeanne Marie (Torch) Walsh, and spent his childhood in the Endicott, NY, area. He graduated from Maine-Endwell High School In 1978 where he played football, basketball and baseball. He attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in King’s Point, NY and Ashland College (now University) in Ashland, OH.

He pursued a career in audio/visual production, conferencing and event services in Chicago for many years before landing in Pittsburgh where he worked for ITA Audio Visual Solutions; Grannie’s Attic (now Mediaquest); Three Rivers Entertainment; Chujko Brothers; and Benack Productions before joining Hughie’s Event Production Services eight years ago where he was a sales support specialist. Joe loved his New York roots (go Giants!) and the time he spent in the windy city (he was a huge Mike Ditka fan) but Pittsburgh was his adopted hometown.

Joe was not only knowledgeable but passionate about baseball. His work took him all over the country and he attended as many MLB games as he could. He prided himself on always attending the Pirates opening home games, but also rooted for the Cubbies and the Yankees. For the last several years, he scouted prospective ballplayers in the greater Pittsburgh area for Capital University in Cleveland. He also enjoyed fantasy football, handcrafted beer, fishing, rock music (he managed two area bands at one point – Three Car Garage and Mercury) and gardening (peppers and tomatoes were his specialties).

Joe’s dogs --Turbo (a Chow) was his first, his second was a yellow lab named Zeus (gifted to him by his Pittsburgh “sister” Denise DeWilde-Lobeck) -- were his loyal, constant companions during their lifetimes and loved to dress up for Halloween. Joe was a great entertainer – he could channel Bill Murray’s lounge singer from SNL, Stallone’s “Rocky” and Brando’s “Godfather” to perfection. He once brought down the house performing The Police’s “Roxanne” at a karaoke night. He truly was one of a kind and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents and his best friend from high school, Tim Meade. He is survived by his sister Theresa (Mark) Mayhew of Rensselaer, NY, and sister Paulette Walsh of Endicott, NY as well as his nephew Cooper (Lexi) Mayhew and great-nephew Julian Joseph along with many dear cousins and friends from all around the country. Joe’s family would like to thank everyone at Hughie’s offices in Cleveland and Pittsburgh; his Sigma Nu fraternity brothers Scott Freischlags, Scott Manahan and Dave Carbone, his adopted Pittsburgh “brothers” Gary Evans, Rob “Maas” Jankowski, Bobby O’Malley and John Nave (apologies if we overlooked anyone); “like family” neighbors Shamus and Maribeth Cringle and everyone else on the street; as well as the gang at Blinky’s Noble Grill & Bar. Joe was still in touch with and loved by so many friends from high school, we can’t begin to list them all. The outpouring of love and support we have received during this difficult time is immeasurable.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 13 from 1-3 pm at William Slater II Funeral Service 1650 Greentree Road, Pittsburgh 15220. (412) 563-2800.  A reception gathering will follow. A celebration of life will also be held on Friday, June 26 from 1 – 4 pm at the Father Clarence Cerwonka Hall at Most Holy Rosary Church, 2596 Main Street (Route 26) in Maine, NY 13802. To honor Joe’s memory, please consider donating to the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Cleveland, Inc., 10011 Euclid Avenue; Cleveland, OH 44106 (Joe participated in the annual Nedly golf outing and pig roast that benefited this organization and was very dear to his heart) or the American Heart Association, https://www.heart.org/en/.
