Died on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the age of 96. He was born July 9, 1919, the youngest of three sons of Edith and Ernest Jefferson. Joe was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Margaret. He is survived by his second wife Mary Jo, a son James (Judy) Mincin), his daughter Sharon (Linda Irwin), his step-daughter, Traci Romedy, and his grandson, Brooks (LB) Romedy.
Joe spent his formative years in Milton, DE and Nemacolin, PA. He was an honors graduate of Waynesburg University. Joe was a proud veteran. During peacetime, he was a pilot in the Army Air Corps. After Pearl Harbor, Joe served as a Naval officer in the submarine service in the Pacific Theatre of WWII.
After his service, Joe started his career in banking. He served as President of Provident Federal Savings in Mt. Washington, Executive Vice President of First Federal of Pittsburgh, and President of Washington Federal from 1968 until his retirement in 1986. Joe was a past President of the PA S & L League, past board member of the U.S. Savings and Loan League, and past member of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board. Joe was active in numerous community charitable organizations. He believed in freely giving back.
Joe was a prolific traveler. Apart from his military service, he visited all 50 states, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South America.
Joe was an avid and accomplished golfer for 67 years. Due in no small part to his longevity, he was able to shoot his age or better more than 500 times.
Joseph Jefferson was a devoted husband, father, and friend. His was a life fully lived and he will be greatly missed.
