Of Carnegie, died peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2015. He was a beloved son of the late Hubert and Margaret Ireland and grew up in Carnegie, PA. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William A. Ireland (Mary) and James F. Ireland (Margaret). He is survived by his cherished sister, Helen R. Fallon (Richard G.); his nephew, J. Christopher Ireland (Marcella). Joe served with the "Mighty Eight" Air Force stationed in England during WWII. He was attached to a wing of B24 Liberator Bombers and completed 21 missions over Germany. On one mission, one of our P51 Mustang Fighters downed a German Fighter when suddenly its engine blew up and a piece of shrapnel went flying above his head. After that, he yelled "Thank you Lord and his blessed mother". Joe graduated from St. Luke High School in Carnegie and California University of PA, getting his degree in Education. He taught in the Pittsburgh Catholic Schools. He liked to read and expand his knowledge. He loved telling jokes and had a great sense of humor. His bright blue eyes twinkled with anticipation for the answer. Joe was a fine Irish tenor and sang in different church choirs. He devoted a lot of his life taking care of his parents in their later years. He will be greatly missed by family members and friends. Our thanks to the staff and workers at Golden Living Center in Mt. Lebanon, and especially Mrs. Cheri Filmore, for their compassionate care.
