John M. Smith

John Michael "Jack" Smith, of Mt. Lebanon, born September 24, 1921, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Elizabeth McDonough, in 2003; a son, James Michael Smith, who died in 2007; a granddaughter, Susan Elizabeth Spinda, who died in 2009. Mr. Smith was the proud father of Mary Lou Spinda-Mangold (Fred) of Shaler, and Kathleen Bailey (Ron) of Mt. Lebanon. A beloved family patriarch, Mr. Smith was adored by his seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, who fondly called him "Poppy or PaPa". Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1942 and served in the Phillipines and Fiji during World War II as a first lieutenant in the American Infantry Division in the U. S. Army. For 40 years, he was a regional manager in the steel industry. After his retirement in 1986, Mr. Smith served as a volunteer at Marian Manor for many years.
