Age 72, of Pittsburgh, passed peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024. Born November 19, 1951, to John A Groll, Sr and Mary Lou Groll. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Nardi) Groll, who just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He was the beloved father of Patti (Brian) Howcroft, John P. (Kimberly) Groll, and Mark (Traci) Groll. Cherished grampap of his only grandson, John W. Groll. Brother to Suzanne (Kevin) Cheesebrough, Marilyn (Thomas) Gaska and Robert (late Diana) Groll. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, John A Groll Sr. and Mary Lou Groll and in-laws, John and Rita Nardi.
John was the third-generation owner of Groll Ornamental Iron Works on the Southside, helping to carry on the family business into its 92nd year. John was a member of the ornamental iron organization, NOMMA and ABANA Blacksmith Organization. The love of his work can be enjoyed by many throughout the city of Pittsburgh. His architectural designs have won numerous awards and have been featured in various publications. Some of his designs include the steeple at Duquesne University, the gazebo at Phipps Conservatory, and the archways at two local universities. He prided himself on the quality and individuality designs of his work.
John lived life to its fullest through his family and friends. He was a faithful member of SS. Simon & Jude Church and Eucharistic minister. After retiring, he enjoyed fishing with his family, watching racing, driving his Mini and working on anything mechanical.
John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Knowing John brought joy to everyone, through his selfless actions and continued generosity.
