CONROY
Captain John Patrick Conroy, USN (Retired)
Age 82, of Collier Township, passed away on Monday, September 3, 2018, after a noble fight with a lengthy illness, being held by family.
Born in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Mary King Conroy and Patrick Joseph Conroy, from Ireland. Married 47 years to his beloved wife, Barbara Thomas Conroy. Proud father of Mary Adams (Jay), and Laura Rust (Patrick). Daideo of Ellen Adams, Cullen & Harper Rust, all of Pittsburgh. Also survived by many cousins in Ireland and the USA.
John was a graduate of Duquesne University, where he was a member of the Gamma Phi Fraternity and DUVA. He received a Master of Arts from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. John has always worked in the financial field, most recently at Wells Fargo Advisors in Pittsburgh. He taught investments for many years at Mt. Lebanon High School's Adult Education Program, as well as those of LaRoche College and Central Catholic High School. His greatest professional love was his career in the US Naval Reserve, spanning 3 decades, retiring with the rank of Captain – Intelligence. Captain Conroy's military decorations include the National Defense Medal (three awards), Presidential Unit Commendation (three awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed forces Reserve Medal (three awards) and Pistol Sharpshooter Medal.
John enjoyed flying as a private pilot, skiing, golfing, cards, telling old stale jokes, reading, and most of all traveling. Last minute Space-A flights were always an entertaining challenge. He and Barbara saw many unusual places in the world. But John's biggest hobby was working; he never stopped. He always worked with dedication and integrity, beginning as a paper boy at age 7, even up until his retirement from finance, when he often talked with clients until late in the evening.
John was the last President of the University Club of Pittsburgh, having started there as a pin boy at the age of 15. He also served as a Past President of The Bond Club of Pittsburgh, treasurer of the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh, member of Chartiers Country Club, the Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Teutonia Maennerchor, and belonged to many professional and military organizations as an active and advising member.
Special thanks to the Sayfat family, and to all Ahiska Turkish friends for being with John, and us, always.
