Bethel PArk

J. Stephen Chamberlin, age 84 of Bethel Park PA, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026, with his family by his side. Steve lived a life defined by love, integrity, and an unwavering devotion to family and education.

Born in Brooklyn to Elna (Challman) Chamberlin and Dr. Gordon Chamberlin, Steve was a 1960 graduate of the Collegiate School in New York City where he excelled in all manner of sports and tolerated Latin. He eventually went on to Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education.

Steve devoted his professional life to the noble calling of education. He began his career as an English teacher, finding fulfillment in helping students discover a love for literature and confidence in their own writing. His dedication to educators and public education later led him to the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), where he served as a union negotiator. Of his work at PSEA Steve wrote, “I was extremely proud of my role as Uniserve Representative for an organization devoted to improving the lives of teachers and the education of children. There is no more important mission in any culture, and ours particularly now.” In that role, he was a tireless advocate for teachers, working diligently to support those who dedicated their lives to educating future generations. His commitment to fairness, respect, and opportunity in his profession left a lasting impact on countless educators and the communities they served.

Above all else, Steve loved his family. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 60 years, Jean (Wiest) Chamberlin, loving father to his son, Dr. Eric Chamberlin (Holly), and his daughter, Chris Porretta (Anthony), dedicated grandfather to Owen, Preston, Duncan, Lily, Brodie and Abby, big brother to Judith Chamberlin, Phil Chamberlin (Cheryl), and Mark Chamberlin (Nancy), and big brother-in-law to Margaret Wiest, Dr. David Wiest (Lynda) and Peter Wiest.

Nothing made Steve happier than spending time with them, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored and doted on every chance he had. Their accomplishments, personalities, and presence in his life were a constant source of pride that he never hesitated to express. A gifted storyteller, Steve loved sharing vivid recollections of his childhood in New York City; stickball in the streets, narrow escapes from local gangs, and pranks involving beleaguered city bus drivers. These tales, told with charm and humor, reflected his remarkable ability to find joy and laughter in the everyday. Over the course of his life, Steve found that joy in poetry, film, British history, and the books of James Lee Burke;

multitudes of cars, motorcycles, wooden ducks and kayaks; tennis; and long meandering drives down back country roads with Jean by his side.

Steve’s strength of character, generous spirit, and the love he gave so freely will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
