Jean E. Rowan

Jean was born in Pittsburgh, June 27, 1924, only child to Edith and Joseph B. Smithyman.  

Jean was a graduate of South Hills High School, Pgh and attended some classes at University of Pittsburgh.  

On June 24, 1949, Jean married Rev. James Arthur Rowan.   She served the Presbyterian church with Rev. Rowan in churches in West Mifflin, Pa, Pitcairn, Pa and Yonkers, New York. In most of these churches she enjoyed singing soprano in the church choir.   Her additional work history included Heinz, Peoples Gas, and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. 

She loved traveling, reading, genealogy, crossword puzzles, watching and feeding her wild birds, and above all, spending time with her family.  She was fiercely independent well into her 90s.  

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and husband.  Survived by daughters, Janice E. (Chester) Spohn of Butler, PA, Nance J. (James) Luetzow of Winter Springs, Florida, Joyce L. Rowan (Arturo Carvajal)  of Pittsburgh and Madrid and son, James D. (Stacey) Rowan of  Tennessee, 6 grandchildren  , Chad (Daphne) Spohn, Lisa M. (Rick) Foley , Jason , Richard and Katherine  Luetzow, Alicia (Curro) Carvajal ; and her great grandchildren, Delaney , Chester, Anaya, Silas ,  Aubrey, Victoria and Lyra .  

No visitation. A memorial service will be held at WM. SLATER & SONS INC. (412-381-3345) 301 Virginia Ave. Mt. Washington 15211 on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 10:00am. Private burial to follow in West Middletown Cemetery, West Middletown, PA.  

The family wishes to thank Mom's caregivers and UPMC Hospice for the thoughtful aid and comfort they gave our mom.
