Gus Johnson, age 95, transitioned peacefully in his sleep on November 3, 2024. Born on December 8, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA, Gus was a loving husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather, as well as a devoted brother, and cherished uncle.

A proud U.S. Army Veteran, Gus served as a Military Police Officer and received various commendation. He was honorably discharged in 1953. On July 31,1954, he married June Davis of Carnegie who preceded him in death. From that union were three daughters: Augustine (Lee), Ernestine, and Linda (Mark). In 1954, he was hired as one of the first black salesmen for Vic Agnew, Inc. For thirty-one rewarding years, Gus worked for the United States Postal Service. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and relaxing hobbies that included listening to jazz, photography, fishing, and camping. A long-time resident of Beltzhoover he was a member of the Community Action Committee during the 1960s and 70s. He was a member of the Big Daddies dedicated to ensuring the safety of the neighborhood during the tumultuous times in the 1960s. He assisted in organizing the annual Fourth of July celebrations and establishing the inaugural Beltzhoover Browns football team. In 1994, he found love again and married Nancy Hairston.

Gus is survived by his loving daughters; grandchildren Matthew Augustus and Monica Lynn (Jeff); and great granddaughters Madison June and Harper Grace. He also leaves behind his sisters Christine Jackson and Pauline Burleigh; brother James;and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Gus Johnson Sr. and Idella Johnson (Norman) and his beloved brother John. 

A visitation in honor of Gus will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM with funeral service immediately following at WM. SLATER & SONS INC.
