Grace Isabella Sgroi Gaita

d. February 27, 2022

With extreme sadness we announce the passing of Grace Isabella (confirmed Elizabeth) Sgroi Gaita. She was born on February 5, 2005 to proud parents Charles (Chuck) and Bethany (Sgroi) Gaita. Grace was a junior at Bishop Canevin High School where she was active in many activities and where her faith was able to be shared with others.

Grace's love of music was evident in the last three years where she played flute in the Bishop Canevin Marching Crusaders band. She actively participated in Student government and was a Student Ambassador where she promoted the school during open houses and elementary school visits. Grace also was part of the Science Club, Crusaders for Justice, Circle of Friends, and the past year's school musical, "All Together Now".

In addition, Grace volunteered at her parish/elementary school, Resurrection Parish/Ave Maria Academy, and at St. Winifred's Food Pantry. She also participated in her parish youth group and helped as an aide at the Upper St Clair Girl Scout Day Camp. For seven years, Grace was an altar server at St. Thomas More Church and volunteered to be a lector. Recently, this past summer, Grace worked as a customer service representative at Pro 3 Services. Academically, Grace earned the BCHS Religion Departmental Award at the conclusion of both her freshman and sophomore years. She also received the Spanish Departmental award at the end of her freshman year. For the last three years, Grace received the Samuel J. Astorino PhD, JD and previously St. Ignatius of Loyola, and Principal's scholarships. She had achieved high honor roll for each quarter of her high school career. Her goal was to attend Duquesne University, most likely to teach secondary level religion or math. Last week, the BCHS principal advised that Grace met the qualifications for induction into the National Honor Society.

Grace's family is very proud of her accomplishments, but they are most proud of the person she became. Grace cared deeply about her family, school, community, and faith. Her faith was at the center of her life, where it guided her daily work and interactions. She dedicated herself to be the best she could be personally, but in the kindest and most selfless way. Grace loved being with people and it showed. We have all been blessed with knowing and loving Grace. She has made us all better people by showing us how to live out our faith in a humble way, but with enthusiasm, authenticity, compassion, and devotion.

Grace is survived by her half-sisters, Christie Gaita and Lauren (Gaita) Gump; her loving grandmothers, Kathleen Sgroi and Mary Moulton; her Godparents, Mark and Leslie (Sgroi) Butera; her beloved cat Cookie and numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Niece and Nephew. She is preceded in death by her grandfathers, John Sgroi III and Art Moulton.
