Age 81, of Upper St. Clair, passed away peacefully at Naples Community Hospital on Monday, October 22nd, 2018.
Son of the late Esther (nee Lieb) and Woodrow Kaufer. Beloved husband of Janice (nee Chisnell) Kaufer. Brother of Sheldon, George, Neil and Richard Kaufer. Beloved husband of Janice (nee Chisnell) Kaufer. Devoted father to Michael, Jill, Jonathan, Wendy, Elizabeth, Abigail and Amy, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Proud father to Robin, Meghan, and Brendan, and six grandchildren.
Jerry earned his undergraduate degrees in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh, and an MD from the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. He completed residencies in general and vascular surgery.
Jerry was commissioned as a Commander in the United States Navy and served in Vietnam from 1967-1969.
Jerry practiced medicine across the metropolitan area for over 30 years, serving as a vascular and thoracic surgeon at Columbia and Montefiore hospitals. He was also one of the founding members of Central Medical Hospital, where he served as chief of surgery for many years. He mentored interns and residents for over two decades, and was an active member of the Pittsburgh medical community his entire life.
He and his family have been members of Beth El Synagogue since 1975.
Jerry was an avid golfer, Pittsburgh sports fan and world traveler. He loved to eat hard shell crabs in Bethany Beach. Jerry enjoyed cruising and Naples,Florida was his happy place!! His passion for living life to its fullest will be missed, but will always serve as an example to his loving family.
Family will receive friends on Monday from 11am-12:30pm at Beth El synagogue, 1900 Cochran Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15220, followed by a funeral service at 12:30pm. Burial service will be conducted at 2:30pm at Interment National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
