George J. Thiros

George J. Thiros of Mt. Lebanon, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 11, 2023.  He is survived by his beloved wife Tula (Gerasimo) of 59 years, sons James and Andrew (Melissa), grandchildren Nicholas and Sophia, brother Anthony, and many nephews, nieces and godsons. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Katherine, and brother Nicholas.

Born and raised in Gary, Indiana, George began taking on jobs at the age of nine to help his parents who were Greek immigrants make ends meet. He graduated from Tolleston H.S. (Gary Public Schools) in 1951, proudly served in the U.S. Army (1956-1958), put himself through college with a degree in civil engineering with honors from Purdue University in 1961, and soon afterwards worked for Graver Tank Co. in Chicago. In 1963, he began an accomplished 34-year career with U. S. Steel as a civil and consulting engineer, project manager and mentor which included a relocation from Chicago to Pittsburgh in 1972 and later extended assignments in France and Indonesia. He and his wife raised their family in the Quigg-Clair neighborhood of Upper St. Clair where he enjoyed the famous block parties and making life-long friends. George received a new lease on life in 2004-2005 when he overcame two forms of cancer and enhanced his appreciation for golf, Friday lunches with friends, volunteering at church with his engineering skills, baking Vasilopita (Greek New Year’s Bread) for family and friends and rejoicing with those who got the lucky coin, and sharing laughs with his wife while they cooked, watched movies, and spent all other precious moments together. He was a devoted family man. George’s positive attitude through challenges was a living example to all of us.  His wife and sons would like to thank the amazing staffs of Family Hospice of UPMC and the Embassy of Asbury Heights for their compassionate love and care.

Family and friends welcome Monday 2-4 & 6-8 pm, Trisagion service at 8:00 pm, WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE (412-563-2800) 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp 15220. Visitation will continue on Tuesday 10:00—11:00 am at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, 123 Gilkeson Rd, Pittsburgh, 15228 where service will be held at 11:00 am. Burial to follow in Mount Lebanon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church re/ Building Fund.
