Dr. George H. Gray, Jr., was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on December 15, 1922. He was graduated from the University of Pittsburgh (B.S. 1944, M.D. 1946). He interned at the Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (1946-1947). he served in the US Army (1947-1949) and was Chief of the Laboratory Service and Pathologist to the 18th Station Hospital, Osaka, and Consulting Pathologist for Southern Honshu, Japan during his tour of duty. He served as a resident in General Surgery and neurological Surgery at the Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, (1949-1953) and was a Research Fellow in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (1953-1954). he was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1957. he was former Chief of the Division of Neurological Surgery at Mercy Hospital; South Side Hospital; and St. Clair Hospital (all in Pittsburgh), and was former Directory of the Neurosurgical Residence Training Program at the Mercy Hospital. He had been Chief of Staff at all three hospitals. He was the Emeritus Associate Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Gray was a member of The American Association of Neurological Surgeons; Congress of Neurological Surgery; American Epilepsy Society; American College of Surgeons (Fellow); Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine (Past President); Pittsburgh Surgical Society; Alpha Omega Alpha; American Medical Association; Pennsylvania Medical Society; and the Allegheny County Medical Society (Past Director). He was a member of the Book Review Committee of the Journal of Neurosurgery and was a charter member of the Pittsburgh Academy of Medicine Thespian Group. He was an Emeritus Member of the Association for Research in Nervous and Mental Disease. Dr. Gray established the first Electro - encephalographic Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was its Director for 25 years. He retired from the practice of neurological surgery in 1986. He was the past Master of his Masonic Blue Lodge (Milnor #287 FAAM) and a Director of the Pennsylvania Masonic Foundation for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among Children. He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a Knight's Templar of the York Rite of Masonry. He was a member of the Shrine (Syria Temple, Pittsburgh), Court #2 Royal Order of Jesters, and Royal Order of Scotland. Dr. Gray was an avid fly fisherman, superb fly tier, skeet shooter, hunter, and a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Dr. Gray was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marjorie (Hickey) Gray and his son, Robert W. Gray. He is survived by four children, Richard H. (Nancy) Gray, Linda (Eric Bee) Perri, Deborah S. Worden, and William A. (Monica) Gray; and eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
