Of Mt. Lebanon, born on December 3, 1929 flew away on August 10, 2022. She just put on her wings and took off to join her husband, the late James Carlton Key.
Elaine was the daughter of the late Fred T. and Heber Smith, and sister of the late Montez Smith Bunten. Survived by three children: Richard E. Key (Audrey), Kathy Key Dollins (Tom), and Jim C. Key (Aneta); seven beautiful grandchildren: James Key, Kristy Velazquez (Beto), Janine Key, Debbie Krebs (Tom), Kelly Dollins (Michael), Alex and Victoria Key; and three great grand-children: Connor Krebs, Levi and Lani Velazquez.
Elaine attended the University of Alabama on an Art Scholarship from National Scholastic Art Awards. Roll Tide! She worked as an interior designer for Mazers for Modern in Birmingham, AL; Rich’s in Atlanta, GA and Kaufman’s in Pittsburgh.
Elaine had a wonderful sense of the ridiculous and zest for life, love, laughter, color and design and a deep faith that guided her through life. To know Elaine was to love her. She enjoyed reading, going to the Cracker Barrel with friends and could often be found in her “smoking lounge”--the garage--putting brush to canvas. Her math skills were unmatched, and never understood by her contemporaries. Elaine had a need for speed, with somewhat questionable scooter driving skills. She had a particular affinity for the color blue, boxed white wine, fudge, and always made time for a cigarette.
A long-time member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, she was a member of Lydia’s Circle. She volunteered as a docent for weddings at Old St. Luke’s. She was a member of Delta Zeta Alumnae of South Hills.
