Edward Brook Rotheram, Jr. M.D. of Mt. Lebanon, PA passed away on April 24, 2026 at age 92. He was born and raised in McKeesport, PA to Dr. Edward Brook Rotheram and Cora Elisabeth Nill Rotheram. Edward was a graduate of Shadyside Academy, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. While at Penn, he met his future wife, Joan Kestner. They celebrated over 67 years of marriage.
Edward practiced medicine at Allegheny General Hospital for over 35 years where he served as the Head of the Infectious Disease Department. He saved many lives and played an important role in the early diagnosis and treatment of emerging diseases such as Legionnaires’ disease and AIDS. Recognized as a brilliant diagnostician, he also operated a laboratory within the hospital, enhancing patient care and treatment. Throughout his career, he devoted long hours to teaching and mentoring young physicians. Beyond his medical career, Edward enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing, snorkeling, bird watching, and music. He taught himself to play guitar and harmonica and enjoyed entertaining family with his talents. Ed and Joan traveled the world but especially cherished their time at Hillsboro Beach, Florida where they enjoyed being with family and friends.
Edward was loved by his family and is survived by his loving wife Joan; his daughters Mary Jo Daly (Leo), Anne Lynch (Michael), and Carrie Bevan (Tom); his grandchildren Jeannette Dow (Chris), Josie Daly, Kate Lynch, Kelly Lynch, Caroline Osborn (Brennan), Tommy Bevan, and Jill Bevan; and his sister Joan MacDonald. Edward was cherished by his four great grandchildren, (Will, Rose, Wesley and Lydia) and many nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his sister Barbara Meredith and brothers-in-law John Meredith and Jack MacDonald.
Family and Friends are welcome Friday, May 1, 2026 from 12:00 PM until the funeral service at 1:30 PM at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Twp., 15220 (412-563-2800). The family will also receive family and friends at a reception at South Hills Country Club from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.
