Age 90, of Pittsburgh passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Providence Point. He was born in La Grange, Texas on March 14, 1934, and the son of the late Frank and Cecelia Lidiak.
Mr. Lidiak multi-sport and student athlete graduated from La Grange High School. He received a Bachelor’s degree in geology and lettered in varsity baseball at Rice University. After graduation he served two years in active duty as an officer in the United States Marine Corp. He returned to Rice and obtained a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in geology. He was then employed as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Texas working on and preparing a study of the basement rocks of the United States.
Following his association with the University of Texas, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science. He served as Chairman in that department for 17 years. A quiet man who made an impact with his students and colleagues.
Mr. Lidiak married Carol Martello on March 4, 1989, who passed away on October 31, 2023, after 34 years of marriage. Together they traveled throughout the world. Caroll would accompany Ed on various geological experiences. They also enjoyed golf, skiing and entertaining friends.
Preceded in death was a brother, Frank Lidiak and wife Anne. Left behind to cherish his memories are sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Doug McKenery, nephews David and Rebecca Stoner McKenery, Frank Lidiak Jr. and partner Grace Dunlap, Michael and Jody Lidiak and niece Marianne Lidiak Baker and husband Jackie Feckoury. He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews.
