Donald E. Plummer, age 94, of Pittsburgh, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he was the beloved son of the late Carl O. and Blanche (McCracken) Plummer. Don was the devoted husband of the late Susie (Brougher) Plummer with whom he shared a life rich in creativity, hospitality, and a shared passion for the arts.
His loving children survive him, Matthew Peter Hughes (Rhonda) and Rachel J. Webster, and cherished grandchildren, Kailey Kramer (Adam), Zachary Hughes, Alexandria Hughes (Carlos), Juliet J. Webster, and Tucker D. Webster. He also leaves behind his great-grandson, Heath Whittman Kramer, who brought him joy in his later years. Don was predeceased by his siblings, yet his memory lives on in the hearts of his nieces, nephews, and devoted friends.
Don’s career as an engineer at Westinghouse was marked by dedication and excellence. Proudly serving his country in the Army, he embodied values of service, innovation, and integrity. Yet, Don was, at heart, a true renaissance man. A passionate patron and collector of the arts, he filled his life and home with beauty, artistry, and inspiration. He transformed an ordinary house into a mid-century masterpiece on Mt. Washington, complete with multi-level Japanese gardens cascading down the hillside—a testament to his love of both architecture and nature.
Don’s enthusiasm for life extended well beyond work and art. A lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan, he held season tickets to the Steelers for decades. He found joy on the slopes as an avid skier and in the freedom of sailing open waters. Known for his quick wit and great sense of humor, Don had an unmatched ability to find laughter in life’s moments, lighting up every gathering with his charm.
Don and Susie’s home was a haven for creators and friends alike, welcoming members of the local music community, and artists of all kinds. His admiration for those who created, whether through music, painting, sculpture or performance, was boundless. He will be remembered as a creator, a visionary, and a friend to many.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life gathering at Gordo’s Tacos, 131 Shiloh St., Pittsburgh, Wednesday, November 13, 2024 from 4-6 PM. Interment will be private to the family.
