Darsetta L. Johnson

July 22, 1963 — May 12, 2021

Darsetta La'Drean Johnson was born July 22, 1963, to Alfred T. Johnson and Dorothy Elizabeth Richardson Fears Johnson in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh. She was the 6th of 7 children. As custom in her family to get a nickname, she was better known as "Candy." Growing up, she learned early the value of family and grew a fondness for her grandmother Kathryn E. Snell (Grandma Bunny). Also, growing close to her siblings and other family members made her into the family-oriented woman she lived to be her whole life. She graduated from Brashear High School when living in the Arlington Heights section of Pittsburgh. She took college classes for Accounting at CCAC and used that education throughout her adult career.

In her early teen years, she met Herbert Banks, and they together brought the three major joys to her life, Markia (Nikki), Monica, and Sasha. Who she nicknamed "Puddin, Fart Fart, & Pumpkin."
If you knew Candy, you knew her girls were the most important people in her life. She worked extremely hard to provide for them and impart values that they could use for the rest of their lives.

In April 2003, a monumental time in her life was the birth of her first grandchild, Jordan, and was followed by her first granddaughter, Destiny, in October of the same year. She began to call Jordan "Snookums," and in turn, Jordan and Destiny called her "Snookums" as well. Later, she was blessed with two more grandchildren, JR, who she called "Boo Boo" and Samia, who she called "Buttercup." They, in turn, referred to her as "Nie Nie." These four "little people," as she called them, were the highlight of her life, and she made sure they knew they were loved. In addition, she enjoyed family vacations, watching movies, shopping, and her all-time favorite, having a BBQ.

Candy made sure to let the people she loved know she loved them, and the ones she didn't, she let them know as well. She wore her emotions on her sleeve and didn't back down from anyone. She was the glue that kept her immediate family together. If she was involved in your life at any point, you most definitely learned something from her.

Candy passed peacefully on May 12, 2021, after complications from Covid-19 and a short hospital stay. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, grandmother Kathryn E. Snell, sister Donna Lynn, and brothers Alfred Johnson and Wendell Fears.

She will greatly be missed by her three children, two sons-in-law, four grandchildren, her remaining siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The imprint she left on our lives will forever be appreciated, and we will miss her dearly.
