Daniel V. Unico, age 99, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Paramount Assisted Senior Living of Bethel Park on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Born to Italian immigrant parents on February 4, 1927, the long-time Dormont resident served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and would later attend Duquesne University on the G.I. Bill. A faithful member of the Alpha Phil Delta fraternity on campus, Dan would forever bleed “Red and Blue”. With his loving late wife, Joan, they would attend every men’s basketball game at the Bluff for over 40 years and every women’s game for over 30. In 2025, Duquesne honored Dan by inducting him in their Athletic Hall of Fame for his lifelong commitment to DU Athletics and the Duquesne Community. At that same time President Ken Gormley presented him with the university’s prestigious Presidential Medal. In 1963, Dan founded Paper Packaging Co., a pizza and bakery box manufacturing business where he continued to work until age 90. Dan’s hobby was gardening, but his passion was growing plants in his basement and attached greenhouse. He also loved the sport of tennis, which he played regularly into his 89th year. But, most of all, “Pappap” was the ultimate family man, supporting his children and grandchildren in their many endeavors and treating the entire Unico clan with trips to Italy and Mexico. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Joan (Moore), his parents Amico and Brigida (Tarquini) Iannacchione, sister Gloria Kip, brother Robert, and his granddaughter Cassandra Unico. He is survived by four children, Kenneth (Sheila) of Mount Lebanon, Mark (late Donna) of Upper St. Clair, Renee Eaton (Mark) of Beaverton, OR and Lisa (Phil Hahn) of Lakewood, OH. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. Friends are welcome Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800), 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., 15220. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM Friday, March 27, 2026, in St. Pius X Church-St Teresa of Kolkata Parish, in Brookline, the parish where Dan attended mass daily for many years at St. Catherine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duquesne University Athletics, c/o Bryan Colonna, Duquesne University, 600 Forbes Ave., Pittsburgh, PA. 15282. www.slaterfuneral.com
