Age 59, of Castle Shannon, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 26, 2023 after sustaining a stroke while on a business trip in Tampa, Florida. He was the loving husband of 30 years to Beverly (Hynes) Collins; beloved son of Daniel J. Collins Jr. and the late Nancy (Cummings) Collins; devoted father of Bailey Le (Kevin) and Ryan Collins; grandfather of Ava An Sung Le; brother to Margaret Welton (William), Patricia Collins (Ted Barnes), and Robert Collins (Juliet); uncle to Christopher Pickering, Kevin Pickering (Jeanne), Emily Samuels (Ryan), Mary Hynes, Dan Barnes (Jaya), Robert Myers, Christine Jackson (Desmond), Devin Snow (Patrick), Daniella Welton, Claire Welton, and Sarah, Emma, Grace, and Jack Collins. Dan was also survived by in-laws Bruce Hynes (Kathleen), Beth Pickering (Mark) and Barbara Myers (Robert), many great-nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
Dan graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School with the class of 1982 and the University of New Hampshire where he played basketball. He was a proud Eagle Scout of Troop 65 and later a Cubmaster of Pack 350 at St. Anne’s Church in Castle Shannon where he and Bev are parishioners. He especially enjoyed the annual Pinewood Derby, raising funds for the Castle Shannon Police Department canine safety vest, and the Blue and Gold Banquets. Dan worked at CRC Industries for 20 years as a Business Development Manager. The last 6 years he worked for Rexel USA as a Strategic Account Executive. He volunteered as a basketball and baseball coach and later as the president of the Castle Shannon Youth Association. In addition, he volunteered with the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Response crew, and with the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department where he completed 10 years of service. Dan also found joy in planning various reunion activities for his high school class. Dan enjoyed both business and family travel, having visited 48 of the 50 states. Dan was a Pittsburgh sports enthusiast and was happy to share his love for the Steelers everywhere he went. More recently, his favorite team was the Susquehanna University Riverhawks, watching Ryan and his teammates win two basketball conference titles. He loved everything about music whether it was discussing it with friends and family or going to live concerts. Dan’s enjoyment of music included musical theater, and especially Bailey's many performances over the years. More recently, Dan chose and posted a weekly “Deep Cut Saturday” song which he shared with his extended circle of friends on social media. While he was always the first to tell you he was not a professional bowler, Dan enjoyed the camaraderie of his friends in a bowling league the past 10 years. Dan was known for frequently bringing a smile and a Wendy’s frosty to his mom, Nancy, in her later years before her passing in 2016, and he always enjoyed weekly Wednesday night dinner, Saturday shopping, and Sunday church with his dad, Dan, who he affectionately called “Chief”. Dan’s goal of being an organ donor was achieved, as both of his kidneys were successfully placed with recipients. Above everything, Dan’s greatest pride and joy was his two children.
