Carl J. Henn

December 5, 1937 — September 19, 2023

Robinson Twp.

85, of Robinson Twp., formerly of Green Tree and Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, PA died Tuesday, September 19, 2023, surrounded by family. Carl was a loving husband to Audrey F. (Hess) Henn for nearly 58 years whom he met more than 60 years ago in a church choir.  They later married on October 2, 1965 at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Green Tree.  Carl was selflessly and tirelessly committed to Audrey, his adoring wife.

A devout Catholic, Carl was loved by a large family and numerous friends and is known by everyone as being remarkably kind and considerate with a dedicated, hardworking, intelligent, and meticulous approach to life.

Carl was an endearing father of Janet (Mark) Weber, Bernard (Karl Holtzer), Keith (Kathy), and Donna (Michael) Shaw; loving grandfather of Amanda (fiancé Timothy Molinari) and Joseph Weber, Joshua, Robert, Matthew, and Lucas Henn, and Katie Holtzer; brother of the late Herman J. (Carol) Henn; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Carl was born on December 5, 1937 as the first son to Carl A. Henn and Theresa (Kraus) Henn who emigrated from Hardeim and Tremau, Germany respectively, to achieve a better life.   From a “blue collar” working family, Carl graduated from St. Catherines in Lawrenceville, then Central Catholic H.S. (1955), and Duquesne University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (1959).   He then began his career as an employee of American General Life Insurance and continued on as an employee of the University of Pittsburgh for many years.  In the 1960’s and 1970’s, he became an industry leader on what is commonly known today as computer systems and data management.  After a short period with NUS Corporation, he completed his career after 13 years with PNC Bank.  He retired in 2000 as a Senior Systems Programmer, managing, operating, and improving IBM mainframe computers for the bank.

Carl was a dedicated, lifetime volunteer to many organizations including St. Vincent de Paul, St Margaret of Scotland Church, and Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank. In appreciation for his kindness and dedication to those in need, he was honored with many awards:

2012: “In Recognition of Outstanding Service to the Parish Community of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish to Carl & Audrey Henn” (November 18, 2012)

2012: In honor of 35 years of Dedicated Service from The Society of St. Vincent DePaul, Pittsburgh PA”

2017: In honor of “40 years of Service to our Brothers and Sisters in Need from The Society of St. Vincent DePaul, Diocesan Council of Pittsburgh” (October 22, 2017)

Carl was an avid railroad enthusiast.   Among his many achievements, he created a 500 square foot model replica of a B&O railroad system including a complex arrangement with sophisticated controls and automation.  This was his passion in retirement, in combination with being with family, helping others less fortunate, and traveling.

Friends will be received Sunday, September 24 from 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm at William Slater II Funeral Service, 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., 412-563-2800.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, September 25 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, St. Raphael the Archangel Parish, 310 Mansfield Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15220.
