Age 77, of Pittsburgh, on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. Beloved husband of the late Mary Lee Kalocay; son of the late Andrew B. and Margaret Koschlick Kalocay; loving father of Michael (Wendy) Kalocay, Jackie Kalocay-Hogg, and the late Jennifer Kalocay; special friend of Connie Zonca; grandfather of Andrew Hogg, Rylee Kalocay and Ryan Kalocay. Bernie touched the lives of many children as a teacher and principal in the South Allegheny School District for 35+ years. He also spent many years coaching baseball and basketball and officiating high school basketball throughout Western PA. An athlete himself, he never missed an opportunity to share stories of his trips to the College World Series as a pitcher for the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team in the early 60s or when he pitched batting practice for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Everyone who met Bernie was warmed by his ever-positive attitude. He had a knack for turning a stranger into a friend in minutes, leaving an imprint on everyone he met. His quirky sayings and optimistic outlook left smiles on the faces of everyone he came across. In his retirement, Bernie enjoyed watching sports, hosting neighborhood gatherings and pulling the handle – unsuccessfully, unfortunately – on slot machines at a local casino. While he has reunited with his wife and daughter, he will be dearly missed by those who love him.
