Amalie Wenteker passed away peacefully Monday, September 15, 2014 in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Born October 9, 1920 in Darregueira, Buenos Aires, Argentina to Jacob and Amalie (Lipps) Wenteker, she was the eldest daughter of ten children. When Amalie wasn't helping her mother care for her younger siblings, she could be found riding horses in the countryside at the edge of the Pampas where she lived. Much of her adulthood was spent in New York where she worked as a professional nanny in Manhattan. Though she had no children of her own, Amalie was truly a mother to many. Even into her later years she would reach across a pew to relieve a distressed mother and calm her crying child. Amalie was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various callings including genealogist, where in addition to helping others discover their family history, she researched her own—Wolinia and Volga Germans who fled political unrest in Europe and immigrated to Argentina at the end of the 19th century. Proficient in three languages, Amalie had many talents. She used them to volunteer her time at the United Nations, and to crochet and quilt numerous items for the LDS Humanitarian Aid Fund. She also learned to pilot a plane and loved to travel. She could be found in Katmandu, Nepal, on the beaches of NSW, Australia, viewing the Mediterranean from Gibraltar, walking in Tokyo, Japan, cruising the Danube River in Romania or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania among many other locations across the globe. She was proud of her US citizenship and a longtime supporter of the Republican Party. She is survived by nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and friends who love and will remember her fondly.
