Alan P. Skwarla

Age 69, of Scott Twp., passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026. Son of the late Alex and Ann (Hopchak) Skwarla. Dear brother of Joan (Harry) Hilewitz. Uncle of the late Alexis Ann Hilewitz. Also survived by several cousins and the light of his life, Millie.

Alan graduated from Chartiers Valley High School and continued his educational journey at Duquesne University School of Education. Upon graduation, he began a career in teaching and music. Alan dedicated many years to education as a music teacher and band director in several public schools throughout the Pittsburgh area, inspiring countless students with his love of music. He later continued his education at the Thomas R. Kline School of Law at Duquesne University, earning his Juris Doctor. Alan was admitted to the bar in both Pennsylvania and Arizona and served as a Supreme Court advocate. Throughout his legal career, he maintained a private practice and also worked with the Allegheny County Public Defender’s Office, using his knowledge, compassion, and dedication to help many people. Alan was also involved in the Big Brothers program, where he mentored a very special “Little Brother” for many years, a role that meant a great deal to him.

Although Alan officially retired only three years ago, he remained deeply involved in the music community he loved so much. Early in his career he founded the Algo Latino Latin Big Band, where he proudly served as both conductor and trumpet player. The group’s success even led to the production of a CD.

Currently, he had performed as a director and trumpet player with the Four Seasons Brass and also as a band director for the Swinging Bobcats Big Band; continuing to share his talent and passion for music with others.

Alan’s life was marked by his dedication to education, service to others, a deep love of music, and a profound love for his family. He will be remembered for the many lives he touched through his teaching, his advocacy, and the care he showed to those closest to him.

Per Alan’s wishes, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to South Hills Pet Rescue, 15 Old Route 88, South Park, PA 15129, where he adopted his beloved pet, Millie.
